OUR MINISTRIES

We have many ministries at St Savvas of Kalymnos Orthodox Church—including youth groups, adult and youth religious education classes, community language classes, philanthropic and cultural groups, and ministries that promote service to our church and the parishioners and guests who attend it.

We encourage you to become involved, as these ministries complement our worship experience, helping us achieve a more Christ-centered attitude in our daily lives. At the same time, if you have an idea for a ministry that we should have, but don't—perhaps one you've participated in at another Orthodox church—let us know! We are always looking for ways to expand the range of ministries we offer.

Sunday School

Sunday School aims to provide an opportunity for children to learn more about the Orthodox Religion. There are a range of activities including workbooks to suit children of all ages (as long as the children sit still and listen we are happy to engage them). Parents and Grandparents are encouraged to bring their children or grandchildren to church on Sundays.

The Sunday school runs every Sunday in the Church Hall from 9.15-10.15am. Children are then brought into the church by their teacher to take  Holy Communion and  remain in the church until the end of the service.

It is a wonderful opportunity for parents/grandparents to bring their children along as it will not only keep the children occupied at church but more importantly they will learn about our faith and religion in a fun environment.

Woman's Philoptohos

Derived from the Greek, the name Philoptochos means “friend of the poor.” As such, the Ladies Philoptochos Society of St Savvas of Kalymnos is a vibrant source of fellowship and philanthropic service in our community.

The purposes of Philoptochos are:

  • Philanthropy - National and local support of charitable organizations and individuals in acute need.

  • Fellowship - Creating opportunities for greater interaction among members of the parish.

  • Outreach - Largely focused on providing food to those in need beyond our parish community.

  • Fundraising for the Church

What is a playgroup?

At  playgroup parents and carers get together with their young children for a couple of hours each week to connect & learn through play and most importantly, have fun. Essentially, playgroup is one of the first, and most important social networks for children and families.

Playgroup activities may involve craft, indoor and outdoor play and morning tea. At playgroup, families can learn new ideas for playing at home, make new friends and share their experiences in a relaxed environment.

Who can attend playgroup?

Playgroup is for babies, toddlers and pre-school aged children. They can be accompanied by mothers, fathers, grandparents, nannies or other carers.

How does playgroup benefit children?

Creative and unstructured learning through play is essential to the development of young children, helping them explore and understand their world.  According to research by the Telethon Kids Institute, the benefits of playgroup are seen across all domains of child development: physical, social, emotional, language and cognitive development and communication. All Welcome!
